WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 7th AUGUST 2022
The club ran our annual community fun day last Saturday with the highlight of the day been the staging of our mini world cup. The competition proved to be a huge success with parents and kids alike. Competition 1 was for the 7's and 8's. This competition was a closely fought battle right up to the last group games. At the end of the group stages nothing could separate England and Germany with both teams finishing level on ten points at the top to book their place in the final. Holland and Argentina finished in a close third and fourth on eight and seven points. The final proved to be a closely fought encounter with England winning 2-1. The under 9's/10's proved to be the tightest group of the day with three teams finishing joint top on twelve points. Argentina, Spain and Italy all finished level and the only way to separate them was goals scored, Argentina scored the most goals and it was left to Spain and Italy to playoff for the right to take on Argentina in the final, Spain won the playoff by a goal to nil. The final was a nail-biting affair with Argentina coming out on top winning 1-0. In the 11's and 12's section Holland and Portugal proved top dogs with the Dutch topping the group on thirteen points followed by Portugal on twelve points. In the final Portugal narrowly defeated Holland on a score line of 2-1. Finally in the 13's/14's competition it was Republic of Ireland who topped the group followed by Spain, third were Italy with Argentina next. In the 3rd/4th place playoff Italy defeated Argentina winning 6-4. The final was a nine goal thriller with the Republic of Ireland coming out on top against Spain winning 5-4. The event was a major success and as always it was great to see the kids enjoying themselves and playing football with smiles on their faces, well done kids. After all the football they still found the energy to take on the bouncy castles with the obstacle course coming in for special attention. It is only right that we thank a few people who made this day happen. Rather than thank people for the individual jobs that they carried out in the build up to the event and on the day, we would just like to thank the following people for their contribution to the event, without your help the day wouldn't have went off as smoothly as it did. A massive thanks to the following people who worked so hard and contributed their time: Corrina Collins, Yvonne Conyard, Karla Clarke, Ann Marie Hanlon, Sophie Byrne, Trevor Conyard, Stephen Clarke, Ross Byrne, Colin Hindle, Johnny Dunne, Paul Delaney, Anthony Earls, Graham Reddin, Tom Foley, Cormac Finn, Philip Slater, Colin Murnane, Kale Conyard and Sam Conyard. A special thank you goes to a couple of young men from our under 16 team, Evan Conyard and Ben Doyle done an excellent job refereeing matches, a fantastic job from both officials. A big thanks to Hannah Clarke who took a lot of photos on the day, maybe a future PRO in the making. Also thank you to Dario Coppola who loaned us his sound system for the day, it was very much appreciated by everyone at the club. Finally, but not least a massive thanks to the kids and their parents for supporting the event, it was a pleasure to see so many kids having fun and playing football, the smiles on the faces said it all, it makes the planning and work involved all the more rewarding, well done everyone and thanks to you all once again.
