A frustrating morning for Wicklow Rovers as the lads exited the U12 SFAI National Cup in the second round following a 3-0 defeat away to St. Anthony’s Kilcoole.
Two goals in the space of 50 seconds in the seventh minute left Rovers with an uphill battle. It’s a reminder that we need to start games quicker and be switched on from the first whistle.
The lads showed great character, with Sam Bewley hitting the crossbar twice, while Daniel McGarry also struck the woodwork in the first half. After the break, Matthew Clarke and substitute Daniel Higgins both had excellent opportunities, while Liam Earls forced a superb point-blank save from the home goalkeeper.
Sam Bewley came agonisingly close again in the 45th minute, rounding the goalkeeper only to see his effort cleared off the line. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t our day in front of goal, and St. Anthony’s added a third shortly afterwards.
Despite the result, there were positives to take from the lads’ performance, particularly their second-half response and the chances created. This was only our second competitive defeat of the season, and the team continues to rebuild and find its rhythm following the mid-season break.
There’s work to do, especially in starting games faster, but the effort is there and the lads are heading in the right direction. Wish St. Anthony's the best for the rest of their campaign.
