Wicklow Rovers senior womens team welcomed Glencormac to Whitegates in their first home game of the Eastern Women’s Football League (EWFL) season. It was a tight game on a sunny evening with both teams evenly matched for the first thirty minutes. At that point Glencormac played a through ball cutting open the Rovers defence resulting in the opening goal. Before the half time break Glencormac had struck twice more to finish the half 3-0 up. Rovers regrouped in the second half and were much more on their toes and quicker to every ball. There were strong performances in midfield from Sophie Byrne and Deirbhle Geraghty. Throughout the game Niamh O’Brien peppered the Glencormac goal but the away keeper was in top form. Ten minutes from time, Wicklow’s persistence paid off with Jade Manley scoring from close range. Rovers pressed until the end but on the night could not convert any further chances leaving the final score at 3-1 to Glencormac. A great performance from all the ladies and they will continue to improve as the season progresses.
