Unfortunately all good things come to an end and that was the case for our under 16 team as they lost to Rathangan in the SFAI South Leinster final in Rathangan. In glorious sunshine Rovers started brightly with Brandon Battams causing their defence problems from the off. The game was only five minutes in when a glorious chance fell to Evan Conyard. A clever chip over the top fell at the wingers feet but he put his effort wide of the mark. Rovers also had another effort just off target a minute later. Five minutes later Rathangan took the lead after a mix up between defence and keeper allowed their attacker tap into an empty net. Things got worse after fifteen minutes when Rathangan scored a fantastic free kick to go two up. Rovers were creating chances and never dropped their heads and were rewarded with a goal five minutes from the break. Lorcan Sinnott delivered a brilliant cross field pass to Evan Conyard. The winger controlled the ball brilliantly and smashed home a half volley to the roof of the net to cut the deficit and give hope to Rovers. The second half was 6 minutes old when Rathangan scored from a corner and try as they might Rovers couldn’t get a goal back. Rathangan went on to score two more and run out 5-1 winners. Not the result Rovers and their supporters wanted but a fantastic achievement to come so far and reaching a Leinster final. In truth the home side deserved the victory on the day but the final result flattered them as Rovers should have been a lot closer.
