Our WDFL Premier team took on Arklow Town at Travers Insurance Park last night. Rovers came flying out of the traps and pressed high straight from the start. After only three minutes Rovers were awarded a penalty when James Lang was fouled in the box. Simon Phillips was unlucky to see his resulting spot kick come back of the post. It was an even enough spell in the first period, Arklow hit the front on fifteen minutes with a lobbed effort from twenty five yards. On the half hour mark Rovers restored parity when James Lang scored when he reacted quickest to the rebound of an Andrew Earls shot. The teams went in at the break at 1-1 and both teams introduced youth team players for the second half. Rovers took the lead when Mikey Merrigan was on hand to slot home from a brilliant Jensen O'Connor Cox run and pass across the box. Jensen then made it three with a run from midfield and a low drive to beat the keeper. Adam Cuddihy missed out on a potential goal of the season when his thirty yard rocket beat the keeper but not the woodwork. It was the trio of Zach Harris, Tomas Kennedy and Mikey Merrigan that caused all the problems for the Town defenders in the last fifteen minutes and Mikey Merrigan converted the Rovers fourth shortly after Arklow had made it 3-2. Credit to Tony Breslin and his team they had five youth team players to our three that all performed well on the night. All in all a good all round team display and a good 4-2 away win.
