Our WDFL Premier team entertained Newtown United at Whitegates tonight. It was the away side who settled the quickest and were definitely the better team in the first half. Conor Clack in the Rovers goal was called on after five minutes as he dived full stretch to tip the ball around the post when a certain goal looked on the cards. Newtown were on top and it was no surprise when they took the lead on eighteen minutes, a good move down the left was completed with a neat finish. Newtown had another couple of opportunities but failed to hit the target. Rovers were slowly coming into the game and just before the break they levelled matters with a good finish from Jensen O'Connor Cox. If Newtown were the better team in the first period it was Rovers who were on top in the second. On fifty five minutes Mikey Merrigan forced the Newtown keeper into a good save. Five minutes later Rovers should have been in front, both Jack Fox and Andrew Earls had a bite of the cherry but the keeper made an excellent double save. Newtown came close with an effort on sixty two minutes but the shot whistled narrowly wide. With twenty minutes remaining Jack Fox was agonisingly just wide of the far post. It was the impressive Mikey Merrigan who was next to try his luck but his powerful half volley just cleared the crossbar. With eleven minutes left Mikey Merrigan sneaked in at the back post but his effort was off the mark. With time ticking away and Rovers going all out in search of a winner they were awarded a penalty with three minutes to go. Simon Phillips stepped up and coolly slotted home the spot kick for what proved to be the winner. It was a good competitive encounter with Newtown on top in the first half and Rovers in the second, on the balance of chances created Rovers deserved their victory.
