Wicklow Rovers U13A welcomed Aughrim Rangers to Whitegates this morning for what proved to be a display of high-quality football from both sides. With several players from both squads away on county duty, it was a prime opportunity for other members of the squad to step up, and they certainly delivered.
The deadlock was broken in fantastic style when Rhys Byrne drove out from the back with purpose, threading a precise, defense-splitting pass through to Jack Murphy, who finished with great composure.
Rovers continued to press their advantage, with Jamie O’Malley showing great awareness to capitalize on an opening and find the net. The attacking momentum stayed with the home side throughout the half, as Daragh Cosgrove and Harry Phillipon also produced clinical finishes to ensure Rovers held a strong position at the interval.
The highlight of the second half—and perhaps the match—was undoubtedly a spectacular set-piece from Daragh Cosgrove. After being awarded a free-kick 20 yards out, Daragh stepped up and curled an unbelievable strike into the top corner, leaving the spectators at Whitegates in awe.
Harry Phillipon continued his fine form with another well-taken goal, while Ollie Behan and Cormac Breen rounded off the scoring for the morning with two very smart finishes.
A massive amount of credit must go to Aughrim Rangers. Despite missing a number of key players, they made the trip to Whitegates and battled tirelessly from the first whistle to the last. Their resilience and fighting spirit ensured a competitive game played in the best traditions of the WDSL.
It was a great morning for the Rovers U13A squad, showing depth and quality across the entire team.
