Our youths team got their new season up and running with a fine 5-2 win away to Ashford Rovers this afternoon. Conditions were not ideal playing against the wind in the first half but Wicklow created some good chances with Georgie O'Neill, Evan Conyard, Charlie Czwalina and Tadgh Lord all going close. The latters effort was a brilliant passing move that started with the Wicklow keeper and working the ball the whole way up the pitch but unlucky for Tadgh the keeper got down well to save. Ashford took the lead when a long free kick was headed into their own net by a Wicklow player. Five minutes later Ashford went two up when another long range effort with the wind at their back went over the head of Matthew Keene in the goal. Rovers responded just before half time. Good work from Alex Sinnott on the right before he crossed to Czwalina who controlled and finished neatly to the bottom left corner. The lads were disappointed to go in at the break losing as they were playing some good football but not taking their chances. The second half the lads were at it from the start and again they were creating some good chances. Tadgh Lord finally got his goal to level matters before substitute Lee Brown put Wicklow 3-2 up after a neat finish from the striker. Another sub Sam Christie got in on the act before Lorcan Sinnott scored the fifth from a long range free kick. A fantastic performance from back to front. Brilliant with the ball and equally impressive winning it back when not in possession. A good start to the league campaign.
