Our 11 Whites were at home to unbeaten table toppers Avonmore this morning on the Rocky Road knowing a win would see them leapfrog Avonmore to go top and also continue their own unbeaten league campaign. And the game lived up to its billing.
An end to end first half of all out attack football somehow ended 0-0 mainly due to the keepers being in fine form for both sides especially Rovers keeper Will Carey with some fine saves.
Rovers stepped it up a notch in the second half and were beginning to dominate but Avonmore remained resilient and dangerous on the counter attack.
Finally Rovers got their reward when an Eoghan Quinn cross was controlled at the back post by Nathan Byrne who squared to Simon Lynch and the midfielder made no mistake from six yards.
More chances followed for Rovers and with ten minutes remaining Rovers struck the crucial second with Lynch arriving in the box to latch on to a cross and slot home.
The whole squad contributed to an excellent team performance with many players showing their best form of the season.
Thanks as always to Avonmore for a very sporting and competitive game.
