Our 11 whites were given the toughest of tasks today in Round 2 of the Jimmy Hackett cup as they went on the road to high flying Aughrim Rangers of the A league.
After a frantic start the game settled down and both sides started to create chances with good saves and sloppy finishing keeping the game scoreless.
But right on the stroke of half time Rangers took the lead when a cross come shot sneaked in at the near post.
HT 1-0 Rangers
The second half continued in the same vein and at times Rangers showed their class with some slick pass and move football but Rovers willingness to work hard was keeping this to a minimum.
Rangers then struck their second when a shot from distance struck their own player only for the ball to drop perfectly in front of goal and he slotted home.
Rovers had nothing to lose with 15 minutes to go and went all out attack leaving only one defender at home while they chased a lifeline.
Another Rangers attack ended with a throw in by the corner flag, two Rangers players worked a lovely one two to get inside the box and the Rangers striker made no mistake from 8 yards.
Rovers were all out attack at this stage and after a period of sustained pressure they got their reward when Mikie O Neill finished with ease after beating his man and racing clear.
The large Rovers support on the sidelines found their voices and roared the lads on to go for Number two.
Rangers looked rattled and Rovers gained hope and momentum, three good chances came Rovers way but their keepers handling was top class.
Try as they might Rovers couldn’t get that second to set up that grandstand finish.
The Rovers players returned home with heads held high after a good display versus a very accomplished Rangers side.
Thanks to Rangers for the game and for the sporting manner from their coach and players throughout the game.
