Our Leinster Senior side welcomed Wayside Celtic to Whitegates tonight in the first round of the FAI Junior Cup. They got off to a great start on eight minutes when JK Moorehouse started the move and finished it with a neat finish after a good move involving three players. Straight away Wayside went close but David O'Connor in the Rovers goal was alert to tip over. On thirteen minutes Jim Foley came to Rovers rescue with a clearance off the line. A minute later Ian Brannigan raced into a last ditch challenge to clear a dangerous move from the away side. Rovers created half chances but nothing to trouble the away keeper. Wayside were creeping into the game and on thirty six minutes they were level. Four minutes later they were in front when the ball came through a crowded area and was finished off. It got worse for Rovers a minute later, David O'Connor saved but the breaking ball fell to an away player who finished to the net to make it 3-1 which was the half time score. Rovers needed to step things up in the second period and on fifty one minutes they were back in the game. A better goal at Whitegates you probably won't see this season, JK Moorehouse picked the ball up on the edge of the box, swiveled and in a flash blasted an unstoppable shot into the top right hand corner of the net. In the sixty fifth minute Moorehouse raced down the right before sending in a teasing cross which cried out for a finishing touch but it wasn't to be. With eighteen minutes remaining Peter Finnegan forced the keeper into a good save. In the seventy eighth minute Rovers keeper David O'Connor got down low at his near post to save well. With a couple of minutes left on the clock Rovers were reduced to ten men and then on the stroke of full time Wayside added a fourth. In truth Rovers gave away a couple of soft goals while also not creating enough clear cut chances upfront. The team has the potential to do well this season with a nice mixture of youth and experience in the squad. Man of the match tonight goes to JK Moorehouse, his pace and strength caused problems for the away team, his first goal saw him start the move on the half way line and was on hand in the area to finish. The second was clinical and it will be surprising if a better goal is seen at Whitegates all season.
