Our WDFL premier team were in cup semi-final action again tonight, following on from their disappointing Wicklow cup semi-final defeat at the weekend they took on Greystones United in the Charlie Bishop cup semi-final at Whitegates. They went into this game seeking a spot in the final and they could have got off to the perfect start as early as the fifth minute. A corner swung over by Mikey Merrigan was met by the head of Dean Noble but his header was off target. As the game wore on Rovers had the majority of possession but were struggling to create a clear cut opening. On twenty four minutes Ian Murphy was called upon to save well from a rare Greystones effort. With the clock ticking towards the half hour mark Rovers hit the front, the Greystones keeper was closed down well by Alan Power with the scuffed clearance falling to Mikey Merrigan out wide on the right. Merrigan hit a firm left footed shot which found the back of the net to put Rovers one up. Eight minutes later Dean Noble cut in from the left and his curling effort was superbly saved by the keeper. The sides went in at the break with Rovers one up, a lead they deserved on the balance of play. The second half failed to provide anything in the first half hour in the way of goal chances with both sides cancelling each other out and alot of play breaking down in the final third. With fifteen minutes left Greystones had a great chance but with the goal gaping the ball was blasted over. On eighty minutes Jack Crowley came close to sealing the win when his powerful effort rattled the woodwork. Rovers made sure of their place in the final when Riain Sweetman Burke fired home the second two minutes into injury time. They will now meet St Peters in the final this coming Sunday in Lamberton home of Arklow Town. On the balance of play the lads deserved their victory but will know the league champions will be a tough proposition on Sunday. On the night man of the match accolade goes to Andrew Earls who was solid at the back while also starting some of Rovers better forward moves from the back.
