The senior ladies followed up their eight goal thriller in which they shared the spoils with Stamullen FC in a 4-4 draw Monday night with another thriller tonight in the Challenge cup against St Pats CFYC tonight at Whitegates. Rovers made the early running and in the first twenty minutes they could have been out of sight. They created several good chances but were denied by the away keeper. Rovers did hit the front midway through the half and it was a goal worth waiting for. Louise Johnson had ventured up for a corner and when the ball fell to her feet just inside the area she unleashed a fierce shot which sailed into the top right hand corner of the net, a goal that would be up there with the best to grace Whitegates this season. Rovers were on top at this stage and Niamh O’Brien was denied on two occasions. The away side squared things up against the run of play and this seemed to give them confidence as they played themselves into the game. At 1-1 the game was even with both sides created half chances, Lucy McGettigan was causing problems as Rovers probed for a second and it eventually came along when Niamh O’Brien pounced to put Rovers in front. Just when it seemed Rovers were heading for victory the away side levelled matters in the dying minutes to cruelly deny the girls a victory they deserved. It was onto extra time and both teams were out on their feet after a magnificent ninty minutes of football. It didn't look like we were going to get a goal in extra time and just when everyone seemed to be settling in for penalties up popped the away side with a winner three minutes from time to cruelly end Rovers hopes in the cup. To be honest Rovers will look back at this game and rue a host of missed chances and know they left it behind them. The whole team put in a good shift, a special mention goes to Sinéad Keogh who impressed in the middle of the park, Jade Manley who was rock solid at the back and Lucy McGettigan when introduced as a substitute and playing through an injury caused problems for the away defence. On the night the girl of the match award had to go to Louise Johnson who marshalled her defence throughout, she was comfortable on the ball and led by example. Then she popped up the other end with an excellent finish which will be up with the best goals at Whitegates this season. The performances are good and the girls are creating chances so that elusive first win is not too far away.
