Wicklow Rovers travelled to Ballinalea Park for only their second outing of the season, facing local rivals Ashford in what proved to be a fiercely contested encounter. With a couple of enforced positional changes due to County Gaelic commitments, Rovers reshuffled their lineup. Goodness Oluwaniy leading the line in place of Jamie Noctor up front, while MJ Costello slotted in at centre half for Alfie Kajani.
The opening quarter was tightly fought, with both sides struggling to establish control. Ashford and Rovers were evenly matched, each probing without creating clear-cut chances. Midway through the half, Rovers came closest to breaking the deadlock when Oluwaniy produced a sharp strike inside the box that rattled the post. Ashford took the lead on 25 minutes, timing their run to beat the offside trap before calmly finishing into the corner. Rovers responded well and were unlucky not to equalise before the break, with Hugo Bradshaw and Kai Hughes beginning to trouble the Ashford defence with their attacking play.
Rovers emerged for the second half with renewed energy and purpose. Charlie O’Neill, Kai Hughes, and Jaime McGowan began to dominate the midfield battle, using the width effectively and threading passes through gaps in the Ashford back line. Sustained pressure saw Ashford concede a number of frees as they struggled to contain the momentum.
The equaliser arrived from a set piece. McGowan’s free kick caused problems for the Ashford goalkeeper, who fumbled under pressure, allowing Will McConnell to react quickest and slot home. Buoyed by the goal, Rovers pushed forward relentlessly.
Another opportunity followed when Ashford conceded a free from 35 yards to halt a promising attack. McGowan struck it superbly, only to see it crash off the crossbar. Rovers’ persistence paid off soon after, as a delivery from halfway dropped kindly for Charlie O’Neill, who showed great composure to lob the keeper from 15 yards and give Rovers a deserved lead.
At this stage, Rovers were in control across the pitch. The defensive unit of Andrew Mitchell, Costello, McConnell, and Harris stood firm, snuffing out Ashford’s attempts to respond. However, with 10 minutes remaining, the game took a twist. Against the run of play, Ashford were awarded a penalty for a soft challenge just inside the box, which they converted to level the match.
Despite the disappointment, Rovers showed great resilience and character throughout, producing a strong team performance. Standout displays today came from Hughes, O’Neill, McConnell, McGowan, and Harris, all setting a high standard in terms of work rate and commitment.
Rovers now turn their attention to their next league fixture at home to Aughrim on the 25th.
