WDFL Premier Division: Wicklow Town 2-3 Wicklow Rovers A 🟢⚪️
Wicklow Rovers A traveled the short distance to Finlay Park this morning for a highly anticipated local derby against Wicklow Town. In a pulsating encounter, Rovers showed incredible character to overturn a two-goal deficit and secure a brilliant 3-2 win, maintaining their perfect away record with two wins from two.
The story of the match belonged to three 19-year-olds - Lorcan Sinnott, Ben Doyle, and Evan Conyard. All of whom have progressed through the club's junior ranks to the senior stage, accounting for all three Rovers goals.
Town started brightly, looking dangerous on the break. They took a 1-0 lead early on after a defensive lapse allowed their winger to finish. Things went from bad to worse for Rovers when a Town free-kick, intended as a cross, sailed all the way into the bottom corner to make it 2-0.
Rovers were indebted to goalkeeper Jack Neville, who kept the side in the game with two spectacular point-blank saves to prevent Town from pulling further away. Those saves proved to be the turning point, as Rovers finally clicked into gear and took control of the game.
Lorcan Sinnott had one effort cleared off the line, but he made no mistake shortly after, rounding the keeper and finishing smartly to bring Rovers back into the match. Just before the halftime whistle, right-back Ben Doyle found himself in acres of space out wide and produced a clinical finish to level the sides at 2-2 heading into the break.
Rovers carried that momentum into the second half, with Shane Devlin and James Fagan beginning to dictate the tempo from midfield. The decisive moment arrived in the 70th minute when Robbie Mearns threaded a perfect "slide-rule" pass through the defense to find Evan Conyard. The winger showed great composure, bending a superb strike around the keeper from 20 yards out to make it 3-2.
Sinnott had a chance to put the game to bed late on in a 1-v-1 situation, but the Town keeper produced a fine save. The final minutes saw Town pile on the pressure, but the defensive line of Terry Healy, Dave Butler, Kevin Cawley, and Anton Clancy held firm to see out the victory.
Standout Performances
It was a brilliant team performance where any player, including the substitutes, could have claimed the individual honors. However, Terry Healy earned the Man of the Match title for a commanding and consistent display in the backline all day long.
Thanks to Wicklow Town for a competitive and sporting game, and we wish them the very best for the remainder of the season.
