Our Senior B team welcomed neighbours Wicklow Town to Whitegates this afternoon in the last 16 of the Wicklow Cup and delivered another fantastic performance, securing a 2-1 victory. This marks the second Premier Division scalp this young team has claimed, having previously beaten St Anthony’s in the earlier round.
Rovers started brightly, with Alex Sinnott and James Fagan working tirelessly in central midfield, effectively cutting out any Town attacks. Ten minutes into the game, Lorcan Sinnott unleashed an unstoppable 25-yard half-volley that left the Town keeper with no chance, giving Rovers a 1-0 lead.
The remainder of the first half was a scrappy affair, with both teams cancelling each other out. The Rovers back four of Ben Doyle, Paul McGann, Anton Clancy, and Jordan Sinnott were solid, preventing any clear chances for Town, and goalkeeper Cormac Doyle was superb when called upon.
Five minutes into the second half, Town equalized with a header, after a cross from the right found their midfielder unmarked, leveling the score at 1-1. For the rest of the half, the young Rovers team displayed tremendous grit, determination, and hard work to keep Town at bay and limit their chances. Cormac Doyle made another fantastic save to maintain the deadlock.
Just when the match looked destined for extra time, Adi Kunle delivered a brilliant ball across the face of the goal, which was met by Jack Noble, who made no mistake in putting Rovers ahead 2-1 with time running out. Wicklow Town had two late corners, but the Rovers defence held firm to secure a fantastic result.
It was a massive performance from every player, including the substitutes, but Man of the Match was awarded to Cormac Doyle in the Rovers goal, who was superb when called upon, and whose distribution was a key factor in the result.
Thanks to Wicklow Town for an excellent game of football!
