Our U11 Green team put in a valiant effort in the Jimmy Hackett Shield Final today, narrowly losing 2-1 to a strong Arklow Town side at the ATFC grounds.
Despite the result, the team can hold their heads high after a fantastic tournament run that saw them overcome several teams from an older age group. This being their first taste of tournament football, they showed incredible determination and skill to reach the final.
Wicklow started brightly and took a deserved lead after 10 minutes through a well-taken goal by Mark Yukhymenko. Arklow hit back 5 minutes before half-time, capitalizing on a defensive lapse to level the score.
The second half was a tense affair, with both teams creating chances. Unfortunately, it was Arklow who edged ahead, scoring from a corner that wasn't cleared effectively. Despite pushing hard for an equalizer and creating some excellent opportunities, the final whistle came too soon for the Rovers.
While the result is disappointing, the team should be immensely proud of their performance. Reaching the final of a tough competition is a testament to their hard work and talent.
"I'm super proud of our players for the effort they put in today. It's hard enough just to get to the final, let alone win one. This experience will undoubtedly serve them well in the future."said Paul Forde, U11 Green manager.
