Our senior B team welcomed Rathnew to Whitegates this afternoon for the division one clash. After a good performance last week against Glencormac, the lads knew this would be a tough battle against our local neighbours.
With a big crowd on both sides of the pitch Rovers started brightly with Georgie ONeill shooting wide and Alex Sinnott also going close. Rovers broke the deadlock with great play from Alex Sinnott, Shane Devlin and Georgie ONeill setting James Fagan away down the right to put in brilliant cross for Ade Kunle to head home and give rovers a 1 nil lead.
Rathnew responded well and if not for Matthew Keene, would have equalised. Keene produced a brilliant save to keep them at bay. Rathnew struck the woodwork before Evan Conyard went close for Rovers, the Rathnew keeper saving well. A free kick from Evan Conyard 5 mins from half time picked out Jack Noble and he made no mistake with a pinpoint header to give rovers a 2-0 lead heading into the break.
Both rovers and Rathnew had chances in the 2nd half but it was Rathnew who grabbed a lifeline in the 85th minute when the ball seemed to hit off the striker's arm and go into the net. Rathnew piled on the pressure and equalised in injury time when Rovers failed to clear their lines and their midfielder made no mistake from 10 yards.
A disappointing result having led 2-0, but a good point for this young Rovers team against an experienced Rathnew outfit.
Shane Devlin, Jack Noble and James Fagan were immense throughout.
