Our senior ladies made the trip to Ferns today for their last game of a very successful season. With the league title and the shield already in the bag, the girls were hoping to add the divisional cup to their trophy haul today. Standing in their way was a good Bunclody team. It was Rovers who started the brightest pushing their opponents back. Aoife Caffrey on the left wing was causing the Bunclody defence untold problems and it came as no surprise when Rovers took the lead it came through this route. Seven minutes were gone on the clock when Aoife took on two defenders and dribbled past them, her cross caused havoc in the Bunclody defence and Edwina Sayer reacted quickest to put Rovers one up. Four minutes later, it was nearly two, Molly Sweeney knocked the ball into the path of the impressive Sinead Keogh and her powerful strike from the edge of the area just drifted over. Twenty six minutes in and it was Molly Sweeney's turn to try her luck, but her shot was just off target. At this stage of the match, it was Rovers in total control. On twenty eight minutes, an Aisling McDonald cross picked out Edwina Sayer but she blazed over. Bunclody's first effort on goal came a minute before the break, but they failed to hit the target.  Rovers were in total control in the first half with Louise Corrigan in the middle of the park running the show. The sides went in at the interval 1-0 up, and on the balance of play, it was well deserved and could have been more. The second half saw Bunclody come more into the game as an attacking force, but this could have been more the case that Rovers sat deep. On fifty two minutes, Aoife Mangan pulled off a fantastic save to prevent an equaliser. The game was a more even affair, but Rovers were depending on Louise Corrigan a lot as she broke up most of the Bunclody attacks with the help of Margaret Doyle in the middle of the pitch When they did get past the Rovers midfield Rovers captain Sinead Keogh was excellent cutting off any avenue through on goal. She was ably assisted at the heart of the Rovers defence by Louise Johnson. It looked like Rovers were heading for victory, but to Bunclody's credit, they never gave up and they were rewarded with an equaliser ten minutes from time. Neither team could find the decisive goal in the last ten minutes, so it was on to extra time. Rovers came out all guns blazing from the whistle and in the first minute of extra time they were awarded a free on the edge of the area. Margaret Doyle stepped up to take over the free kick duties and she coolly dispatched the free with precision and power to the top left hand corner to restore the Rovers lead. With that quality finish, you would wonder why she hadn't taken one up till then. Two minutes later, Rovers were in dreamland. Louise Corrigan and Margaret Doyle combined in the engine room to set Aisling McDonald away, Aisling shrugged off her marker and made no mistake firing Rovers 3-1 up. Definitely that equaliser near the end of normal time was the wake up call Rovers needed as they now looked more like the team that played in the first 45 minutes. Rovers were comfortable now, but Bunclody found the net in the dying seconds to make it 3-2. On the resumption, the referee blew the full time whistle to spark off wild celebrations as Rovers had just completed the treble. It was an exciting tussle, but Rovers deserved their victory. There were some impressive performances around the pitch in what was a good team effort.  Sinead Keogh played a captain's part leading by example and was a rock at the heart of the Rovers defence while also popping up in attacking positions. Louise Johnson complimented her partner at the centre of defence with an impressive solid display. Aoife Caffrey caused havoc in the first half and was instrumental in the opening goal. Aisling McDonald put in a great shift, working up and down the right wing and also scoring the third goal to seal the deal. Molly Sweeney worked hard across the line. Margaret Doyle worked hard in the centre of the park and that crucial goal from the free kick would grace any football arena.  As player of the match goes, the officials awarded it to Louise Corrigan and l would personally agree one hundred percent with their choice. Louise was at the heart of the engine room. She covered every blade of grass on the Ferns pitch. Her work was so valuable to the team, helping her defence and creating a lot of the Rovers attacking pursuits into the Bunclody half. One of her impressive aspects of her game was her ability to get herself between her opponent and the ball when Bunclody were in possession. She was still going strong after 110 minutes. Well done girls on a fantastic squad effort. Congratulations to Paul, Tom and the ladies on a great season.
