Our 12C's got their first win in the Shield this evening when they hosted Rathnew B at the Rocky Road. The sides met in the league on Sunday, with Rathnew winning that one 2-0. Rovers started strongly and took the lead when Aaron Lynn picked up a Rathnew clearance and struck from outside the box into the far top corner. Lynn doubled Rovers lead shortly afterwards, again firing home from outside the box. The Rathnew keeper got his hand to the ball but couldn't keep it out. Rathnew then pushed for a goal but the Rovers defence held firm. After soaking up the pressure, Rovers went on the attack again and following fine wing play, Olivia Stephenson controlled the ball and drove it past the Rathnew keeper. 3-0 at half time.
The second half started with Rathnew on the attack. Loukas Karamalis made a number of fine saves to maintain Rovers lead. Rathnew's pressure paid off and they scored from a tight angle near the byline, leaving Karamalis flat footed. Rovers continued with their attacking play and scored a fine fourth goal through Nathan Byrne. Great passing through the Rathnew rearguard created the opportunity for Byrne, who calmly powered the ball past the Rathnew custodian. A great spectacle of football and a fine team performance against a very good Rathnew side. Thanks to Rathnew again for another competitive match.
