Our Leinster Senior team took on Dublin Hospitals FC at Whitegates tonight knowing three points would see them promoted. After a very uneventful first eighteen minutes the game burst into life in a three minute spell at the twenty minute mark. The away side hit the front with a good finish at Arthur Delahunt's near post. Rovers were level within a minute and what a goal it was. Tommy Smullen hit a thunderbolt into the roof of the net from twenty five yards out with the keeper standing no chance, a definite contender for goal of the season. Rovers joy was short lived though as Dublin Hospitals went straight down the other end to retake the lead with a wonderful goal from distance to match Tommy's. Rovers were chasing an equaliser and it came seven minutes before the break when Ciaran McGettigan clinically finished from the right side. Just before the break Davy O'Sullivan thought he had put Rovers in front but the visiting keeper saved well. 2-2 at the break and it was all to play for. We were only three minutes into the second period and disaster struck for Rovers when the away side hit the front for the third time and the lads were left chasing the game again. On fifty eight minutes Ciaran made a surging run into the Dublin penalty area resulting with him been taken down leaving the referee with no option but to point to the spot. Up stepped Davy O'Sullivan to blast home into the bottom right hand corner of the net to level matters at 3-3. With thirty minutes remaining Rovers needed to get the next goal as three times they found themselves behind and chasing the game. And it was Rovers who got the next goal, a fine header from Tommy Smullen put Rovers ahead for the first time and it would be interesting to see if the visitors could come back. To their credit they did try but Rovers rearguard guard of Jim Foley, Ian Brannigan, Ben Algera and Jamie Snell held firm. On seventy six minutes Ian Brannigan had the keeper worried with an effort from thirty five yards out. Davy put the icing on the cake three minutes from the end with a looping header over the keeper to make it 5-3. A good team performance from the lads and a positive finish to a long hard season, well done lads.
