It was an all division 3 battle in the last sixteen of the Wicklow cup at Whitegates tonight when our WDFL team took on Ashford Rovers C. Ashford went into the game as favourites with Wicklow only registering one win in the league to date and having lost twice to their visitors already this season. Ashford started the better against a very young home side creating several half chances. Pat Sammon in the Wicklow goal was called upon midway through the half and he was equal to it pulling off a superb save. Ashford went in front on thirty seven minutes with unstoppable shot that gave Pat Sammon no chance. The teams went in at the break with Ashford one up with the home team creating very little in the way of clear cut chances even though they were well in it. Wicklow had an excellent first ten minutes of the second period creating openings that could have changed the game, they created three clear openings in that spell where they should have scored but on each occasion they were agonisingly off target. Ashford killed the game off with their second of the match and showed the experience in their team to see the game out to progress to the quarter finals. The young Rovers team put in a good shift all over the pitch but a little bit of experience sprikled through the team could do them good. It was a good team performance. We would like to wish Ashford the very best of luck in the quarter finals.
