WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 4th JULY 2021
Well, it was a long time coming but at last we have got all our junior teams back on the playing field, it’s been a stressful fifteen to sixteen months due to covid but at last we are getting some normality back in our lives. Even though the restrictions on sport have been lifted we should still be cautious and vigilant and observe the covid rules so we can enjoy this return to sporting activity. Anyway, on the playing front on Saturday the 12A’s got their season off to a flyer with an impressive victory away to St Anthonys, this was an excellent all round team performance with every player impressing on the day. The 12B’s went down 5-0 at home to Roundwood, this game could have been a lot closer as the young Rovers side had several chances of their own. To be fair the Roundwood keeper also pulled off a couple of fantastic saves and on another day, Rovers could have had a few goals of their own. The 14B’s put in a spirited performance despite going down 5-1 to Arklow Town A at Whitegates. In a section where B teams have been pitted against A teams the side gave a good account with Jack Reid nabbing the Rovers consolation goal. On Sunday the 13A’s recorded a good 6-2 away victory over local neighbours Rathnew, Josh McCall stole the show with an excellent hat-trick, Sean Patrick Guerin, Ronan Phelan and David Johnston all notched singles in what was a good solid team performance. A special mention to the Rathnew keeper who pulled off several excellent saves, one in particular was a contender for save of the season from a Sam Behan thunderous strike. The under 15’s got off to a great start in the league when they claimed all three points in a 7-0 away win over Arklow Utd, Brandon Battams fired home a brace of goals with Lorcan Sinnott, Charlie Czwalina, Evan Conyard, Georgie O’Neill and Harri Armstrong all adding singles to get the 15’s off to a dream start.
With the WDFL setting up a senior ladies league the club posted an advert to see the level of interest in a ladies team in the club.
