Our under 13A's made the short journey to Shamrock Park to take on neighbours Rathnew. The first chance of note came to the home team on sixteen minutes when a mix up in the Rovers defence let Rathnew in for the first goal of the game. This was the signal for Rovers to step up the pressure on the home team. Rovers forward play was rewarded on twenty minutes when a brilliant solo run fron Sean Patrick Guerin ended with Guerin firing home to level matters. The second half started with Rovers on the front foot but they found the home net minder in inspired form. Sam Behan was sprung from the bench five minutes into the second period and it wasn't long before he made his presence felt. Two minutes after coming on Behan played a neat pass in for Josh McCall but his effort was blocked. Two minutes later Sam Behan raced past the home defence and his thunderous strike looked all over a goal until the Rathnew keeper pulled off a save that would be a contender for save of the season, a wonderful strike from Behan and a save to match. Shortly after Rovers got their noses in front when Josh McCall made it 2-1 with a neat finish. This was to signal a goalfest, Ronan Phelan fired home to make it 3-1. The home side pulled one back straight from the restart to make it 3-2. A minute later Rovers restored their two goal cushion with a high quality finish from David Johnston, Johnston picked the ball up thirty yards out and let fly to give the home keeper no chance as the ball flew into the top right hand corner of the net. From the restart Rovers won possession and the impressive Josh McCall raced through to add his second and Rovers fifth. Five minutes from time Rovers completed the scoring when McCall stole in to neatly tuck the ball away to complete a well taken hat-trick and give Rovers a deserved 6-2 victory against a spirited Rathnew team. Rovers turned in a solid all round team performance. A special mention goes to the Rathnew keeper who pulled off several top drawer saves.
