WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 27th JUNE 2021
The club saw four of our junior teams in competitive action at the weekend, on Saturday the 12A’s were cruelly defeated in the final of the premier shield when they lost 3-2 on a dreaded penalty shootout to Arklow United. Normal time and extra time failed to separate the sides as they ended locked at 1-1 with Sean Patrick Guerin nabbing the Rovers goal. Josh McCall and Ronan Phelan were successful from the spot and the team turned in an all round excellent performance and were very unlucky to lose out. Well done to the team and their coaches Darren and Dave on getting to the final. Congratulations to everyone connected to the under 14’s as they claimed the premier shield with a fine 4-1 victory over a tough Avonmore side. Charlie Czwalina led the way with a brace of goals with Lorcan Sinnott and Harri Armstrong adding singles in what was a superb performance from every player. Once again congratulations to Trevor, Ray and the team on a successful start to 2021. The under 16’s claimed third spot in the Wicklow Advertiser shield with a 4-2 victory over Carnew. The highlight of the game was a fantastic hat-trick from the impressive Robert Cherry who was a constant thorn in the side of the Carnew defenders, Ben Patterson completed the scoring for Rovers as they signed off with a fine third place in the shield. Well done to everyone and good luck on the step up to youth football. On Sunday the 13B’s took on Glencormac United in the C shield final and we were served up a tight thrilling game. This was another game where the sides couldn't be separated with the teams tied at 1-1 at full time. Adam O’Brien was the Rovers goalscorer on the day from the penalty spot and then we went to the dreaded penalty shootout but on this occasion Rovers came out on top by three goals to two. Rovers turned in a fantastic display to get their season off to a successful start. Congratulations to Christian and his team, well done everyone.
Our 50/50 draw runs on a continuous basis, the draw has a guaranteed monthly winner who will also have the opportunity to top up their winnings by predicting the bonus ball in the main National Lottery draw the following night after been drawn out. The tickets cost €5 each and you can buy as many tickets as you like. The next draw will take place on Tuesday July 6th at 8pm and will be streamed live on our club Facebook page. To enter the draw all tickets must be purchased before midnight on Wednesday June 30th, any tickets purchased after this will be entered in the following month’s draw. With the WDFL setting up a senior ladies league the club posted an advert to see the level of interest in a ladies team in the club. We have had a very positive response with the result we now have a full squad of players who are starting to train this week. We are now seeking a coach/manager for the senior ladies team, if you are interested in this position please contact club secretary Stephen Clarke at wicklowroverssecretary@gmail.com or alternatively you can contact any committee member.
Our 13B team are seeking a manager for the upcoming season. The applicant must be keen and enthusiastic, coaching experience is desirable but not essential as the club will ensure you get the coaching education required. If you are interested in getting into coaching and managing a team this could be the position for you to get started. The club are delighted to inform people that our annual soccer camp returns after last years was cancelled due to covid. The dates for our annual Summer Camps are as follows, week one will run from Monday 12th of July to the 16th of July and week two will run from Monday 26th of July to Friday 30th of July. The camp will take place in the Whitegates and will run daily from 10am to 2pm. The camp is for children from 4 years old to 13 years old, the cost is €65 per child, €120 for 2 children from same family, €170 for 3 children from same family, €200 for 4 children from same family. The club’s weekly junior soccer academy continues every Saturday morning [weather permitting] under the watchful eye of senior club coaches Johnny Dunne, Stephen Clarke and Jimmy Nolan. The academy takes place on the club grounds at Whitegates and is open to all kids from the age of 3 years to 8 years. The academy starts at 11 o’clock and finishes at 12. There is no need for registration so you can come along to any week that suits. Come along and learn the skills of football while having fun and enjoyment, it’s a great way of meeting new friends as you learn the skills as you get prepared for the introduction to participate in organised league football in the coming years.
