Wicklow Rovers AFC has officially marked a historic milestone in its 51-year history with the formal turning of the sod at Whitegates, signaling the start of construction on our state-of-the-art, all-weather Astro pitch.
This landmark development represents the culmination of years of rigorous planning, disciplined financial management, and unwavering community backing. Once completed, this modern facility will secure a reliable, year-round playing environment for more than 400 active players across 26 teams.
An Essential Transition to All-Weather Play
The move to an all-weather surface has become an absolute necessity for our club's survival and growth. As the Irish climate becomes increasingly unpredictable, we have struggled to accommodate our growing membership on traditional grass surfaces.
The past 18 months have been particularly gruelling for our infrastructure. Both the main pitch at Whitegates and our secondary grounds at Rocky Road suffered severe, long-term surface damage due to relentless rain. Although the club invested significant funds simply to maintain and repair these grass surfaces, teams were still left side-lined for weeks at a time. Efforts to rent external pitches locally were exhausted, as local schools and nearby facilities faced the same capacity and weather pressures.
This new, professional-grade Astro facility will permanently break that cycle of weather cancellations and training disruptions.
Supporting Local Infrastructure and Jobs
The construction programme is being carried out by Wicklow’s own Pridesports, a highly respected local company. By partnering with a local firm, Wicklow Rovers ensures that this major investment directly supports local jobs while delivering a professional-grade surface built to serve the town for decades to come.
While construction means a temporary period without home fixtures at Whitegates, we extend our sincere thanks to both the Wicklow District Schoolboys/girls League (WDSL) and the Wicklow District Football League (WDFL) for their flexibility in facilitating "away" fixtures to keep our teams active. We also extend our deep gratitude to our neighbours at St. Anthony’s Kilcoole for generously hosting our home matches during this transition, ensuring our players don't miss out on vital game time.
A "Three-Legged Stool" of Financial Support
The delivery of this project has been made possible through a disciplined, balanced financial model:
- Capital Sports Grant Funding secured through government programs.
- A Decade of Disciplined Fundraising driven by the tireless work of club members, families, and local sponsors.
- A Strategic Club Loan to bridge and secure the final construction phases.
We owe a major debt of gratitude to past committees, whose foresight led to the initial grant applications, and our current committee, who successfully navigated the complex planning, financial, and logistical hurdles to get spades in the ground. The club also extends its sincere thanks to Wicklow County Council for their invaluable guidance and assistance in bringing this vision to reality.
Support the Journey: Join Our Fundraising Committee
To support the repayment of the strategic club loan secured for this build, we have established a dedicated Fundraising Committee. This group will lead upcoming community events, sponsorship drives, and club initiatives to ensure our long-term financial security while we deliver this world-class facility. Delivering a project of this scale requires the backing of the entire Rovers family. If you are a club member, a local business owner, or a supporter who wants to get involved or offer support, we warmly invite you to reach out and help us secure the future of Wicklow Rovers AFC.

Garry Collins, Club Chairman, commented on the significance of the development:
"This development is a total game-changer for football in Wicklow. For too long, our players, from our academy kids to our senior squads, have been at the mercy of the weather. We have reached a point where our grass pitches simply cannot cope with the demand of 26 teams.
By partnering with Pridesports, we are building a future where no team has to miss a training session or a match because of a waterlogged pitch. This isn't just about a new surface; it’s about providing a reliable, high-quality home for our community. We are incredibly proud to finally deliver a facility that matches the talent and dedication of our members."
The future at Whitegates is incredibly bright. We look forward to welcoming you all to our new home very soon.
