Our 15A’s produced an excellent all-round display to secure a deserved 4-2 away victory over Arklow United in the U15 Premier League today.
The visitors made the perfect start and opened the scoring after just three minutes. Daniel Clarke played a superb ball into Mikie O’Neill, whose initial effort was brilliantly saved by the Arklow goalkeeper. However, the rebound fell kindly to Casey Brennan, who showed great composure to finish brilliantly from 18 yards and give Rovers an early lead.
Arklow responded quickly and levelled the game just three minutes later following a well-worked move down the left wing.
Wicklow Rovers regained control after 20 minutes when Will Carey restored the lead with an excellent free kick. The visitors continued to threaten and extended their advantage in the 34th minute. Jack Collins provided the assist for Mikie O’Neill, who finished well to make it 3-1 heading into half time.
Rovers carried their momentum into the second half and struck again just two minutes after the restart. O’Neill showed great awareness to intercept a back pass to the Arklow goalkeeper before calmly finishing to make it 4-1.
To their credit, Arklow refused to give up and reduced the deficit in the 52nd minute with a superb strike from the edge of the box, ensuring Wicklow Rovers could not afford to relax.
As the home side pushed forward in the closing stages, goalkeeper Ben Morrissey proved crucial for the visitors, producing two outstanding saves in the dying minutes to preserve Rovers’ two-goal advantage.
Ronan Byrne was outstanding throughout for Wicklow Rovers, while every squad member played their part in a superb team performance and an excellent away victory.
