Wicklow Rovers U13B traveled to Travers Insurance Park today to take on Arklow Town B in a highly competitive Division 1 Cup encounter. It was a very tight game from the first whistle, with Rovers forced to weather an early storm from a strong Arklow midfield.
The Rovers rearguard showed great discipline and worked tirelessly to keep the hosts at bay. The breakthrough came midway through the first half when Jack Dowling won a crucial ball in midfield and fed it through to Aidan Hughes. Aidan unleashed a spectacular strike from 25 yards that rifled into the net, giving Rovers a hard-earned lead to take into the halftime break.
The second half continued in a similar fashion, with both defenses dominating play. However, with just ten minutes remaining, Arklow managed to find an equalizer to send the match into extra time. Unfortunately for the Rovers, the extra period proved one step too far as Arklow pulled away to secure a 4-1 win and advance to the next round.
Despite the result, there were several outstanding performances across the pitch. The back four of Sophie Byrne, Jack Dowling, Amin Mohammed, and Josh Thompson were rock solid throughout the game, while the energetic displays of Alex Mullen and Andrew Gough also stood out. The team can be very proud of the effort and heart shown in a tough cup environment.
