Wicklow Rovers U16s were involved in a highly sporting and entertaining encounter at a sun-drenched Vartry Park yesterday, eventually falling to a 2-0 defeat against Roundwood. Rovers started the game with great confidence, dominating long spells of the first half with composed possession and attacking intent. Despite this control, Roundwood broke the deadlock against the run of play with a clinical finish from a well-placed free-kick to lead 1-0 at the break.
In the second half, the Green and White responded with immense heart, pushing hard for an equaliser and creating several dangerous opportunities. However, they found the Roundwood goalkeeper in inspired form, and the hosts eventually added a second to seal the win. While the result is disappointing, the quality of football and the determination shown to fight until the final whistle provide massive positives to build on for the rest of the season.
