Wicklow Rovers U12A began their new season with a home fixture against Arklow at Whitegates this weekend. The squad came into the match in good spirits after several strong weeks of training and were eager to get the campaign underway.
The visitors took the lead early in the game after a mix-up in the Wicklow defence allowed Arklow to capitalise and go 1–0 ahead. To their credit, the Wicklow players responded well. They quickly settled into the game, taking control of possession and creating several good chances. Their efforts were rewarded when they equalised from a well-delivered corner, bringing the score level.
However, Arklow responded strongly before the break, scoring two quick goals in succession to give themselves a 3–1 lead at half-time.
The second half was a competitive battle, with both sides creating opportunities. Wicklow continued to press forward and tested the Arklow defence and goalkeeper on a number of occasions, showing great determination and attacking intent. Arklow managed to add one more goal during the half to extend their lead.
The match finished 4–1, but there were plenty of positives for Wicklow Rovers to take from the performance. The players showed great spirit, worked hard throughout the game, and created many chances. With the season just beginning, the team will learn from the experience and look forward with confidence to the matches ahead.
