Our Senior B team welcomed last year's Premier Division champions, St. Anthony's of Kilcoole, to Whitegates this afternoon for a Wicklow Cup first-round clash, and put on a brilliant performance to secure a 4-2 victory.
Rovers started brightly and were rewarded after 20 minutes. A short corner routine between Evan Conyard and Dillon Vickers resulted in Vickers hammering the ball into the far top corner for his first goal in 11 years!
St. Anthony's responded in kind with an equally impressive strike, their midfielder unleashing a shot from 30 yards that beat Cormac Doyle in the Rovers net. Neither team could find another goal before halftime, and the teams went into the break locked at 1-1.
Five minutes into the second half, Ade Kunle produced a spectacular half-volley to give Rovers a 2-1 lead. Just five minutes later, good pressure from Georgie O'Neill forced a mistake from the St. Anthony's keeper, and O'Neill coolly slotted the ball into the empty net from 25 yards. With 15 minutes remaining, an indirect free kick, worked between Trevor Conyard and Jordan Sinnott, allowed Sinnott to smash the ball home, giving Rovers a deserved 4-1 advantage. St. Anthony's pulled a goal back in the dying minutes, but it wasn't enough, and Rovers ran out 4-2 winners.
It was a great result for this young Rovers side. The back line of Ben Doyle, Dillon Vickers, Jordan Sinnott, and Paul McGann were superb throughout, while Jack Noble caused problems for the St. Anthony's defense all game. Special mention must go to James Fagan, who put in a Man of the Match performance.
