Wicklow Rovers Ladies returned to winning ways with a thrilling 6-3 victory over Courtown Hibs at Whitegates today.
Determined to bounce back from their first match back after the winter break, the Rovers started strong with Aoife Caffrey causing problems down the left wing. Caffrey's attacking threat led to a corner kick, and Molly Sweeney's in-swinging delivery was unfortunately turned into the net by a Courtown defender for an own goal.
Rovers doubled their lead when Sinead Keogh played a perfectly weighted through ball to Molly Sweeney, who calmly finished past the onrushing keeper.
Courtown Hibs fought back with two quick goals, both originating from attacks down the left-hand side, leveling the score at 2-2.
Undeterred, Rovers responded immediately. Ashling McDonald, pushing forward from midfield, found Molly Sweeney who was fouled in the box, earning a penalty for the home side. Niamh O'Brien stepped up and coolly slotted the ball home to restore Rovers' lead.
Five minutes later, O'Brien struck again, this time with an assist from Molly Sweeney, to make it 4-2. Courtown Hibs managed to pull one back just before halftime, leaving the score at 4-3 at the break.
The second half saw Courtown Hibs pressing for an equalizer, but Rovers held firm. In the 75th minute, goalkeeper Lisa Doyle bravely came out to claim the ball but suffered a clash of knees to the head, requiring treatment. Louise Johnson stepped in to take over in goal for the remainder of the match.
Despite the change in goal, the Rovers continued to attack, with Niamh O'Brien completing her hat-trick and Molly Sweeney adding her second goal of the day. The team showed great spirit and determination to secure a well-deserved 6-3 victory.
