Wicklow Rovers WDFL C team faced a tough test in their first match back after the Christmas break, falling to a 3-2 defeat against Roundwood at Whitegates.

Despite a promising start from the Rovers, it was the visitors who drew first blood after 10 minutes, capitalizing on a quick counter-attack to take the lead. Roundwood doubled their advantage 15 minutes later, courtesy of an unfortunate own goal that saw an awkward cross deflected into the back of the net.

Rovers showed resilience and pulled a goal back in the 35th minute. Shane Lincoln's powerful free-kick rattled the crossbar, and Rory Dowling was on hand to head home the rebound, making it 2-1 at the break.

The second half saw Rovers maintain the pressure, but against the run of play, Roundwood extended their lead. A simple ball over the top from a free-kick was expertly finished by the Roundwood forward, restoring their two-goal cushion.

Despite the setback, Rovers continued to fight and managed to reduce the deficit once again through Cormac Waldron. However, despite their best efforts, the home side couldn't find an equalizer, and Roundwood held on for a 3-2 victory.

Although the result didn't go their way, the C team showed great determination and fighting spirit in their first match of 2025.
