Wicklow Rovers U12B team braved the elements and a tough Avonmore side last night at Whitegates to secure their place in the semi-finals of the end-of-season Shield competition.
Playing with the sideways rain battering them in the first half, the Rovers lads took a while to find their rhythm. However, midway through the half, they seized their first real opportunity. Bogdan Kashcheiev did some excellent work down the right wing before setting up JD Delahunt to tuck the ball away and give Rovers the lead.
Despite the challenging conditions, the score remained 1-0 at the break. With the wind at their backs in the second half, Rovers took control and added two more goals to seal a convincing victory. Charlie Shine doubled the lead with a neat finish at the far post after a great run by JD Delahunt. Bogdan Kashcheiev then capped off a fine performance with a composed finish in a crowded penalty area to make it 3-0.
Credit must go to Avonmore, who battled hard throughout the match and never gave up despite the scoreline. The Wicklow Rovers supporters also deserve praise for braving the awful conditions to cheer on the team.
This victory sets up a semi-final clash against Rathnew U11A. With the team showing such determination and resilience, hopes are high for another strong performance in the next round.
