Wicklow Rovers Ladies suffered a 5-2 defeat to a well-drilled Aughrim Rangers side despite a spirited performance.
The Rovers started brightly and were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty in the opening 10 minutes when a handball call in the box was waved off by the referee. Aughrim capitalized on the let-off, hitting Rovers on the break with two quick goals to seize control of the match.
Despite the setback, the Rovers midfield duo of Aisling McDonald and Sinead Keogh began to dictate the tempo, creating chances for forwards Molly Sweeney and Niamh O'Brien. However, the Aughrim keeper was quick off her line, thwarting the Rovers attack and launching quick counter-attacks that led to a third goal before halftime.
Five minutes into the second half, Rovers finally found the back of the net. Niamh O'Brien played a perfectly weighted pass to Molly Sweeney, who finished with aplomb. The goal ignited the Rovers, and they soon found a second through Sweeney again, who turned her defender and fired home from close range.
With momentum on their side, Rovers pushed for an equalizer, but Aughrim weathered the storm and caught Rovers on the break again, scoring twice in the closing stages to secure a 5-2 victory.
Despite the loss, the Rovers Ladies showed great character and determination. They will look to bounce back next week and return to winning ways.
A big thank you to Aughrim Rangers for their hospitality and a great game of football.
