A solitary goal in the last 5 minutes of the first half was enough to give Rovers a fantastic hard fought win in the trophy final against St Anthony’s on Tuesday night at Whitegates. After being the losing side in a close encounter with St Anthony’s in the league last month, Rovers reversed the form on the night to take the honours.
The first half was a very tight affair with not many chances, as both teams defences came out on top. The opener came from Rovers near the end of the first half, when some good play down the right side of midfield from Bogdan and Charlie O’Neill got JD Delahunt into a dangerous position on the right hand side of the St Anthony’s box. JD rounded one defender and crossed to the back post, which was met by the on rushing Nathan Harris who finished clinically into the bottom corner. The huge Rovers support on the bank erupted with delight.
The second half was a superb defensive display by the Rovers boys, as they held on to their one goal lead. St Anthony’s had more of the possession in the second half as they probed for the equaliser. However, some really solid play from our defensive trio at the back Mark, Larry and Dara, and some excellent goal keeping from Alex enabled us to keep the clean sheet.
Fantastic scenes at the final whistle as the pitch was flooded with supporters celebrating with the lads. A big thank you to Johnny for having the pitch looking so well on the night.
Thanks to St Anthony’s for a good honest and hard fought contest. They played some nice football and I’m sure their day will come soon.
Finally a big congratulations to all the Rovers players and coaches on a great trophy win. The culmination of the hard work you have put in throughout the year and the improvement is evident for all to see. COYBIG 👏👏
