Our U15A team delivered a masterclass today, securing an emphatic 4-0 victory against Derry Rovers in the U16s National Cup at Oaklands Edenderry. From the first whistle, the lads controlled the tempo and dictated play, showcasing their impressive attacking prowess and defensive solidity.
The Rovers' dominance paid off early on when Sam Goodbody soared above the Derry defense to head home a perfectly delivered corner kick from Giorgio Morgillo-Fidyk. The lead was doubled soon after, thanks to a moment of brilliance from Sean O'Brien, who expertly won the ball and delivered a pinpoint pass to Cathal Byrne, who calmly slotted the ball past the keeper.
Despite a spirited effort from Derry Rovers in the second half, our defense stood tall, with Ted Hasler commanding his area and making crucial saves, particularly from set pieces. The Rovers then put the game beyond doubt with a swift counter-attack. Wolsey Sloan Kelly won possession in midfield and, after a quick one-two, released Darragh Cullen, who raced through on goal and confidently finished to make it 3-0.
With Derry's resistance broken, the Rovers continued to create chances. A surging run from Giorgio Morgillo-Fidyk was abruptly halted by a foul in the penalty area, and he stepped up to calmly convert the spot-kick, sealing a comprehensive 4-0 victory for Wicklow Rovers.
This was a complete performance from the U15s, who demonstrated their quality and determination throughout the match. A big thank you to Derry Rovers for their hospitality and for a competitive game played in excellent spirits. Onwards and upwards for our young Rovers!
