The sun was shining on Arklow Credit Union Park this morning when our U13's travelled down the M11 to take on Arklow Utd U14's in what turned out to be a humdinger of a game.
Rovers had the better start and were unfortunate to fall behind in the 6th minute when an attempted clearance ended up in their own net. AJ Long was tormenting the left side of the United defense and his excellent deliveries paid off in the 19th minute when he found Daniel Clarke at the back post, who slotted home to level things up. A sucker punch came just before half time when United broke down the left and cooly placed the ball into the Rovers net to give them a 2-1 lead at the break.
But this Rovers team doesn't quit and despite creating chances in the second half it looked like the spoils were going to United until Will Carey deservedly equalized in the final minute of the game. 2-2 at full time meant that the game was to be decided by a penalty shoot out.
Cool heads on Rovers shoulders saw them prevail 4-2 with Long, Carey, Simon Lynch and Jack Collins all converting from the spot. Goalkeeper Ben Morrissey made sure that only 4 penalties were required after producing two wonderful saves from the United efforts.
This result was a super team effort contributed to by every member of the squad. It's great to see the boys gelling together and improving week on week.
Thanks to Arklow United for the game and the very best of luck for the remainder of the season.
