Our Under 13Bs moved to the next round in their Shield campaign with a resounding 4-1 victory against St. Anthony's U14s at a rainy Whitegates this morning. Despite the weather, both teams served up a highly entertaining match with some excellent football on display.
Rovers drew first blood with a spectacular free-kick from Michael Carroll, the center-half's first goal of the season. They quickly doubled their lead when substitute Chris Delahunt broke through the defense and smashed an unstoppable right-footed shot into the back of the net. St. Anthony's pulled one back with a superb goal of their own, breaking down the right flank and finishing with aplomb to make it 2-1 at halftime.
The second half started with Rovers on the front foot, but it took some crucial saves from goalkeeper Matthew Gough to maintain their lead. Rovers soon extended their advantage with a fantastic right-footed strike from Charlie Lawlor, making it 3-1. The Rovers saved the best for last, however, with Casey Brennan capping off a brilliant team move to score their fourth and final goal.
Despite the wet conditions, both teams and their supporters contributed to a thoroughly enjoyable morning of football. A huge thank you to St. Anthony's for a great game and to all the supporters who braved the weather!
