Wicklow Rovers C ended their 2024 league campaign with a trip to Newtownmountkennedy this afternoon. Unfortunately it was a bad day at the office for Rovers who have been much improved this season.
Both teams went for it from the start but it was Newtown who got the early breakthrough with an excellent finish from distance which left goalkeeper Lukas Karamalis without a chance. Newtown added to that goal shortly afterwards. Rovers didn't give up and got a deserved goal with a classy finish from Aaron Lynn.
Newtown restored their 2 goal cushion as Rovers got caught with a swift counter attack just before half time. In the second half Rovers gave it everything from the kick off and we're again caught on the counter.
The loss of centre half Sean Donnelly to injury didn't help the cause and Newtown added 2 more. Fair play to Rovers, they didn't give up and they dominated the last 15 minutes and should have added a second goal but the Newtown defence and goalkeeper thwarted attack after attack.
Good performances on the day from Luke Mulhall, Federico Caruso and Kai Jameson. Thanks to Newtown for the game and we now look forward to the Shield competition starting in a couple of weeks.
