The greens welcomed Shillelagh to Whitegates for their last game of the season. Rovers come into the home tie in good spirits and on the back of three wins from their last four matches.
An immaculate pitch, beautiful weather, and superb support from the sidelines was the perfect setting for the seaon finale. Having played each other twice already in the season, both teams were set up defensively and much of the first half was played in the centre of the park.
Rovers started to find the gaps with the Rovers wingers and Jamie Noctor causing the most headaches for the Shillelagh back three. The greens were winning the dogfight in midfield, spreading the ball on the counter attack and hammering the Shilellagh goalmouth.
The relentlessness of the Rovers attack finally broke Shillelagh with just 5 minutes to go in the first half, Hugo Bradshaw working his magic in the box and slotting the ball past the Shillelagh keeper and breaking the deadlock for the greens.
As the floodlights came on over Whitegates for the second half, Rovers found another gear. The back three of Kajani, Costello and Reade were a collective powerhouse on the night. Learning from the previous two encounters, they dominated the ariel battle and smothered the Shillelagh attack.
Forward, Ben Murphy was electric on the night, physically draining the blues defence and unlucky to put Rovers two ahead with a sustained attack on the Shillelagh goal. Sam Reade came closest with a strike from outside the box on the hour mark, the Shillelagh keeper getting his finger tips to push it over the bar.
It finished 1-0 to the greens, a well deserved victory to bring the curtain down on the league season. The greens now focus their attention on the 2nd round if the National Cup (fixture TBA) and the final of the trophy towards the end of October.
