WICKLOW ROVERS AFC CLUB NOTES WEEK ENDING 18th FEBRUARY 2024

Our senior A team smoothly moved through to round two of the Wicklow cup with a 6-0 home victory over Ashford Rovers A on Friday night. The lads controlled the game from start to finish. They went in at the break 3-0 up with goals from Tommy Smullen, Lorcan Sinnott and Oussama Kemouche and it was no more than they deserved. The second half was more of the same with Lorcan Sinnott earning the man of the match accolade with two superb goals to complete his hat-trick and Oussama Kemouche adding his second of the match. There were three red cards in the game, one from the home team and two for the visitors but in truth this wasn't a dirty game. Bryan Doyle also came in for a special mention for his performance in the middle of the park. The lads will be happy with their performance, big thanks to Ashford for the game. The senior B team travelled to the Back Alley on Saturday to take on Carnew A only for the referee to deem the pitch unplayable. The C team had a bad day at the office when they went down to Arklow United B at Arklow Credit Union Park. Nothing is going for the team at the moment and hopefully they can sort it out on the training pitch.

The senior ladies were on the road when they took on one of their title rivals Oylgate United. It proved to be a tight tussle between the sides with a share of the spoils for the teams in a 1-1 draw. Molly Sweeney nabbed the Rovers goal to bring her tally for the season to seventeen in what was a good all round team performance from the girls. It was a good point away from home against one of their title rivals and it will only be when the season comes to a close that we’ll know how good a point it was.

On Friday night in the junior section the under 14B's travelled to Travers Insurance Park to take on Arklow Town A. It turned out to be a tight affair with defences on top throughout. There was the one decisive goal though and unfortunately for Rovers that fell to the home side. Rovers gave everything in their quest to get something from the game, but it wasn't to be on the night.

On Saturday the 12A's went down 1-0 to Roundwood at the Rocky Road. The lads controlled the game for long periods but didn’t make their dominance count. They had chances to get something from the game, but lady luck wasn't on their side. Despite the conditions both sides got the ball down and played good football. The lads gave everything with Will McConnell earning the man of the match. The 12B's lost 3-1 to Arklow Town at Whitegates on a miserable morning for football. To both team’s credit they produced a very entertaining affair to keep the supporters on the edge of their seats. JD Delahunt popped up to score the Rovers goal. Our U12C team were very unlucky to lose by the narrowest of margins to Arklow United at Arklow Credit Union Park. In challenging weather conditions Rovers took an early lead to go one up through Billy Nolan and managed to hold on until half time. Arklow drew level, before going on to take the lead through a wicked deflection. But fair play to our players, their heads never dropped, and their perseverance paid off scoring a very well-deserved equaliser from Pradyan Pravish. On top and with only a few minutes to go, Rovers found themselves on the wrong end of a very harsh penalty decision. Our goalkeeper Mithul Saravana was very unlucky not to keep it out with a very strong hand, only to see it hit the top of the net. Again, we kept going and in the final moments Billy Nolan was very unlucky not to get another, just missing the post by inches. Great credit to both teams for putting on a lovely game of football and well done to Arklow.

On Sunday 13B’s were in impressive form on the road when they defeated Avonmore 4-0, Seb Gould started the scoring to put Rovers on the road to victory. Alex Philippon, Eoghan Quinn and Lukas Araminas all scored one a piece to secure their first win of the season. A special mention goes to Michael Carroll for a man of the match performance. The 13C’s were another team to impress with a superb 2-1 local derby win over neighbours Rathnew B. Rovers coped with the soft underfoot conditions better and goals from Federico Caruso and Finn Malone in his first ever game gave Rovers a good three points against a good Rathnew side. Big thanks to our neighbours for a very good game.

The club are running their annual Easter camp again this year, the camp will take place from Tuesday 2nd of April to Thursday 4th of April. The camps will run from 10am to 2pm daily and takes place at Whitegates. Cost of the camp is €45 with a reduction for families with two or more kids. All kids should bring a packed lunch, drink, football boots, shin guards and rain jacket. A registration link will be posted on the club facebook page in the coming week.

The club’s weekly junior football academy continues every Saturday morning [weather permitting] under the watchful eyes of senior club coaches Johnny Dunne and Jimmy Nolan. There is no need for registration so you can come along to any week that suits. Come along and learn the skills of football while having fun and enjoyment, it’s a great way of meeting new friends as you learn the skills as you get prepared for the introduction to participate in organised league football in the coming years. It is a very good way for the kids to interact with others, all the kids are put in their relevant age groups and its open to boys and girls. Everyone is welcome to attend.
