Our senior B team kindly sponsored by Ernie’s bar welcomed Newtown to Whitegates yesterday in a WDFL division 1 clash. The lads after last weeks performance knew they would need to up their game to get anything off an experience Newtown side. The game was five minutes in when Rovers took a deserved lead. Cormac Doyle was causing the Newtown defence problems, and it was his work that led to Rovers scoring courtesy of Aaron Armstrong. The midfielder reacted quickest to a loose ball to fire past the Newtown keeper. Rovers had another couple of good chances but couldn’t find the second goal. This would cost Rovers as Newtown equalised after a mistake in the Rovers defence on 25 minutes. Rovers again went in front when a Cormac Doyle corner was headed brilliantly to the net from Conor Lewins to give Rovers the lead 2-1 at half time. The second half saw both teams cancel each other out before a well worked passage of play got Newtown their equaliser. Rovers had two late chances to snatch the three points when Jordan Sinnott struck the crossbar and Dan Kavanagh also went close after great work from Ben Doyle down the right wing. Another good point for the lads but they will feel they left the three behind. An entertaining game of football from two competetive teams on the day. Rovers were well served by Cormac Doyle who put in a motm performance, Georgie O'Neill and Cillian McAllister.
