The senior ladies travelled to Rathangan to take on Fastnet Rovers, on a pitch that wasn't in the best condition. But that didn't put the girls off as they set the tone for the game early on with Molly Sweeney opening up the defence with some nice one-two passes with Niamh O'Brien to put Rovers 0-1 up after three minutes. The midfield four of Sophie Byrne, Sinead Keogh, Louise Corrigan and Jodie Walsh pressed Fastnet high on the ball to put Rovers in control of the game and the highline pressure paid off with Molly again breaking through the back line to get a one on one with the keeper but a Fastnet Rovers defender got back and fouled Molly in the box, resulting in a penalty. Louise Corrigan stepped up to coolly put away the spotkick. Fastnet applied a bit of pressure on our defence (Aoife Caffrey, Anne Murphy, Louise Johnson & Laura Davis) for the next 15 minutes but the centre pairing of Anne Murphy and Louise Johnson kept them at bay. From one of the attacks, Fastnet got a corner, from that they scored their only goal of the game. Louise Corrigan made a quick response in restoring Rovers two goal cushion with some great skill and movement to make space for herself to get off a shot from outside of the box to make it 3-1. Next it was Niamh O'Brien's turn to get in on the action and score two goals in quick succession to make it 1-5 at half time. In the second half both teams started to feel it with the heavy under foot conditions taking their toll. As a result the pace of the game slowed down, but the skill and passing from the girls didn't lapse. Molly who was ever pressing throughout the whole game got her second of the match when she tracked down a loose ball, played a one-two with Sinead in the middle of the pitch to create some space for herself to get a shot off for her second of the game. At this stage, Wicklow had three players on for a hat-trick, but it was neither of them who got the next goal. Aoife Caffrey who moved up to the left wing after sub Rachel Byrne had come on for Jodie received the ball from Natasha McCoy Ward, found space on the left side making her way up to the edge of box before scoring a cracker of goal in the top right hand corner of the net. With fifteen minutes left on the clock, Wicklow Rovers didn't let up and kept pushing for more goals, but Fastnet caught Rovers on the break with a long ball over the top to have a one on one with Sophie Lacey in goal but just as most people were expecting a goal, Sophie stood tall and saved the low shot off to her left. On the next attack Rovers where given a free on the edge of the area, Molly stepped up with an air of confidence knowing that she was going to get her hat-trick, with an excellent free kick into the top right hand side of the goal - making it 1-8 to Wicklow Rovers at the final whistle. So far, the ladies are unbeaten in the league and are hoping the rich vein of form will continue until the end of the season.
