It was the battle of the Rovers under the lights at Whitegates last night. The A team entertained local neighbours Ashford Rovers in what promised to be a tight local derby. It was sixth versus eighth with Ashford one point above the lads. Both sides came into the match on the back of wins in their last games, Ashford over Avonmore and the lads defeating Glencormac United in that nine goal fest encounter winning 5-4. This game proved, as we thought, was a tight affair with the Rovers of Wicklow coming out on top by a solitary goal to nil. It looked all over it was going to be a share of the spoils until Ciaran McGettigan popped up with the winner in the dying seconds. It was a game where defenses were on top throughout. The lads had chances but Ashford could have sneaked it too. This narrow win sees the lads move on to eight points and jump up a couple of places in the league standings. Big thanks to Ashford for a good competitive local derby.
