The under 13A's will be hoping for another good run in the SFAI cup following last season's great run to the regional final. Today, they entertained a good Mullingar Athletic side. It was Mullingar who hit the front with an early goal, but Rovers levelled soon after. Mullingar scored to go 2-1 in front and were making things difficult for Rovers. The teams went in at the break with Mullingar 2-1 up, but in truth it could easily have been 5-5 only for two outstanding keepers. Rovers stand in keeper Harry Bowen was in outstanding form between the posts pulling off some fantastic saves while the Mullingar keeper was top class with several great saves too. The second half saw Rovers push the visitors back, but the keeper was stopping everything. Then Rovers finally found an equaliser. They went on to quickly go 4-2 up but still couldn't shake off the visitors as they pulled one back to make it 4-3. Any lingering hopes the visitors had of sending the game to extra time was extinguished in the dying seconds when Rovers added a fifth to run out 5-3 winners and book their place in round three. The Rovers goalscorers saw David McCormack bag a brace with Richard Carton, Robbie McCoy and Tommy Morrissey all firing home one a piece. It was an excellent all round team performance, but a special mention goes to stand in keeper Harry Bowen who was outstanding between the posts pulling off several excellent saves at crucial times in the match. Well done Rovers and thanks to Mullingar for a good game.
