With several players missing, the senior ladies travelled to play Gorey Rangers with 12 players and of those 12, two players were sick but that didn't put them off. Rovers conceded the first goal after a few minutes, it was the first attack from the Gorey side. Five minutes later Rovers were back on level terms as a lovely pass from Sinead Keogh in the middle of the park to Niamh O'Brien to put her through for a one on one with the keeper and she duly tucked it away. Rovers started to dominate and control the game with some pressure been applied by the front line of Niamh and Molly Sweeney with support from Sophie Byrne.
During this spell of pressure Rovers had a goal disallowed for a very close off-side call. Gorey got a lucky break with some confusion in the back line which lead to an in-direct free kick within the box to make it 2-1. Niamh got her second of the day with some good hassling from Sophie in the middle of the park and a nice pass into Niamh to finish off to make it 2-2. Two minutes before half time Gorey got their third of the game, a long ball up from their back line with the Gorey forward very close to been off-side. Not what you needed just before the break and things in the start of the second half didn't go in Rovers favour with two early second half goals from Gorey put Rovers on the back foot at 5-2. But this didn't knock the heart out of the Rovers ladies in their quest to get a goal. Aoife Caffrey playing out right wing was constantly chasing the ball throughout the game and one of the challenges paid off as she won the ball back and played a neat simple pass to Molly who skipped past two Gorey defenders and passed the ball to Niamh who put the ball in the back of the net for her hat-trick, 5-3 now with 25 minutes to go. Gorey tried to get the next goal of the game but center back pairing of Anne Murphy & Louise Johnson ensured this wasn't the case with some tight marking and taking control of the ball. From one of Louise's long clearance the ball broke to Niamh and she raced through on goal to make it 5-4, the game had now started to swing back into Rovers favour with about 15 minutes left in the game. The next goal was crucial, Rovers midfield of Sinead, Sophie, Aoife & Lucy McGettigan were hassling Gorey's midfield every time they got the ball and from one these high presses the ball broke to Sophie who passed it out to Aoife on the right hand side, she got past one player and from outside the edge of the box she took a shot and it flew into the top left hand corner of the goal. 5-5 now with only minutes left to play and with the Rovers ladies feeling like this was their day they kept pushing for the winner but it wasn't to be as it was Gorey who got their sixth goal on the break, it was a long ball over the top similar to Gorey's third goal, it was just not meant to be today.
It was a superb effort and team spirit that the ladies showed today with an exciting season to look forward to with the full strength squad.
